Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir a historicidade da conformação da equipe de enfermagem no Brasil, no sentido de compreender seu processo de profissionalização e o ‘lugar’ ocupado na equipe multiprofissional de saúde, hoje, pelos profissionais de cada uma das categorias da enfermagem: enfermeiros, técnicos e auxiliares. Para tanto, retoma o início da história da enfermagem brasileira no período da colonização como uma atividade caracterizada pelos cuidados prestados aos enfermos. Recupera a constituição das primeiras escolas, cursos, especialidades e, portanto, das ênfases que marcam o processo de profissionalização da enfermagem brasileira, salientando a ausência de ‘convencimento’ da sociedade de valores estruturantes da profissão como a orientação para o serviço. Tem como pano de fundo as políticas de saúde da época e as tensões oriundas das definições das atribuições das diferentes categorias da enfermagem que coexistiam, mas não constituíam, de fato, uma equipe. O artigo, ao explicitar fatos relativos à profissão, à regulação de sua formação e à regulamentação de seu exercício profissional, permite desvelar as tensões da integração de profissionais com maior e menor nível de formação, as demandas do mercado e a divisão do trabalho na enfermagem. This article aims to discuss the historicity of the training of the nursing staff in Brazil, in order to understand its process of professionalization and the ‘place’ it takes in the multidisciplinary team of health in the present by professionals in each of the nursing categories: nurses, technicians and assistants. In order to do so, it turns to the beginning of the history of Brazilian nursing in the colonization period as an activity characterized by the care for the sick. It retrieves the establishment of the first schools, courses, specialties and, therefore, of the emphases that marked the professionalization of the Brazilian nursing process, highlighting the absence of ‘convincing’ of society about the structuring values of the profession as the service orientation. Its background is that of the health policies of the time and the tensions arising from the definitions of the functions of the different categories of nursing that coexisted but did not constitute, in fact, a staff. The article, by clarifying facts related to the profession, to the regulation of their training and to the regulation of their professional practice, allows the unveiling of the tensions of integrating professionals with higher and lower levels of education, the demands of the market and the division of labor in nursing (AU)
